Heat is propagated by irradiation when thermal energy passes from a hot body to a cold one by means of electromagnetic or infrared waves.<\/p>\n<p>Irradiated energy travels at the speed of light (3 x 10 cm\/sec), acting in a similar way to light radiation. When infrared rays hit a body, they may be refracted, reflected, absorbed or diffused depending on the type of irradiated material, the quality of the surface and the radiation wave length. Radiation is absorbed to varying degrees, but it has been proved that wave lengths of between 2 and 4 microns (medium waves) have the highest penetration power as regards the vast majority of substances. Herschel published his results in 1800 before the UK Royal Society. Herschel used a prism to refract light from the sun and detected the infrared, beyond the red part of the spectrum, through an increase in the temperature recorded on a thermometer. He was surprised at the result and called them \u201cCalorific Rays\u201d.
